Reparations: No Longer a Dirty Word
Dear Friends of The Long Shadow and Frances Causey Films,
Webster defines reparations as the making of amends for a wrong one has done, by paying money to or otherwise helping those who have been wronged.
As our film The Long Shadow tragically investigates, the institutionalized economic apartheid perpetuated against African-Americans in our country which was LEGAL until 1965 has had devastating consequences in African-American communities across the country.
Evanston, Illinois courageously became the first city to actually provide monetary reparations to African-Americans who have suffered from housing discrimination over generations. The city council there voted 8-1 to distribute $25,000 to16 eligible black households to use for home repairs or as down payments on property. IT’S ABOUT TIME.

Make no mistake, the time for hand-wringing and lament by white folks in our country has passed. We must act to support the meaningful transfer of money by whatever means is possible into these communities. Perhaps most importantly, we must resist the inevitable white pushback that always accompanies this kind of action.
My best to you all,
Frances
